June 16, 2025 — A lawsuit has been filed by a woman who was burned when hot food ejected out of her Crock-Pot Pressure Cooker.
The plaintiff, Aaquila R., is a resident of Minnesota who was burned in June 2021 while using a Crock-Pot Easy Release 6-Quart Pressure Cooker (specifically Model Number CPPCV60-SS).
She accuses the manufacturers, Sunbeam Products and Newell Brands, of failing to warn her about the serious safety risks associated with pressure cookers.
Her lawsuit quotes the User’s Manual, which includes statements about safety — including specific statements regarding “safety sensors” that were supposed to lock the lid until it was safe to open.
For example, the manual claims that “pressure will not build if the Lid is not shut correctly and has not sealed,” and that “once the pressure increases, the Lid cannot be opened.”
Instead, according to her lawsuit, she was able to easily twist open the lid with normal force when the Crock-Pot Pressure Cooker was still pressurized.
This caused a sudden release of built-up pressure inside the pot, which ejected scalding-hot food and liquid onto her body.
She suffered “serious and substantial burn injuries,” for which she is seeking damages from Sunbeam Products and Newell Brands.
Her lawsuit was filed on May 15, 2025 in the U.S. District Court for the District of Minnesota — Case Number 0:25-cv-02119.
