January 27, 2025 — A federal jury in Colorado has awarded $55.5 Million to a woman who was burned by a Crock-Pot Multi-Cooker.
Sunbeam Products and Newell Brands were found to be 90% liable for her burn injuries. The jury decided that the plaintiff was 10% responsible, which will typically reduce her award by that amount.
The plaintiff, Georgina P., claims that she was burned by a defective Crock-Pot Multi-Cooker that she purchased from Target in Colorado.
The product is a multi-cooker, but she was using the pressure cooker feature when she was using it to make beans. About 20 minutes after the beans were done cooking, she opened the steam-release valve.
The pressure cooker “violently exploded” as soon as she touched the lid, according to her lawsuit, resulting in severe burn injuries:
“The moment Plaintiff made contact with the Subject Multi-Cooker, it violently exploded, sending scalding hot beans and liquid into Plaintiff’s face and chest, the ceiling, and the surrounding kitchen.”
She was immediately rushed to a local hospital for treatment, which involved extensive skin debridement and about 5.3 square feet of skin grafts on her face and body. The burn injuries covered about 13% of her body, including her face and full-skin-thickness burns to her chest.
She still suffers from long-term complications, according to the lawsuit. The burns have left her with severe scarring, disfigurement, skin discoloration, intense itching where she was burned, numbness, and problems regulating body temperature due to damaged skin glands.
Her lawsuit blames Sunbeam Products and Newell Brands for selling a dangerously defective product. In November 2020, the same model of Crock-Pot Multi-Cooker that caused her injuries was recalled.
Her lawsuit was filed against Target Corporation, Sunbeam Products, and Newell Brands on June 15, 2023 in the U.S. District Court for the District of Colorado — Case 1:21-cv-01915.
