May 28, 2024 — Best Buy has been sued by a mother and son who were burned by a recalled pressure cooker.
The lead plaintiff, Shianka W., is a mother from New Orleans, Louisiana, who was allegedly burned by the pressure cooker, along with her 7-year-old son, identified as “L.H.” in the lawsuit.
According to her complaint, she was using the pressure cooker in May 2023 when they both suffered “serious and substantial burn injuries.”
The pressure cooker involved in the incident was a Insignia 8-Quart Multi-Function Pressure Cooker (Model Number NS-MC80SS9) from Best Buy.
Just a few months after she and her son were burned, this model of pressure cooker was recalled by Best Buy due to a burn hazard.
The recall was issued after 17 people were burned when they overfilled the pot due to incorrect volume markings. Over-filling the pot could cause hot food and liquids to be ejected when the pressure cooker was opened or vented using the quick-release method.
Her lawsuit was filed on May 13, 2024 against Best Buy Co. Inc. and Midea America Corp. in the U.S. District Court for the District of Minnesota — Case Number 0:24-cv-01730.
