January 9, 2025 — Costco has been sued by a man who was burned by an Instant Pot Pressure Cooker that ejected scalding-hot food and steam when he opened the lid.
The Instant Pot Lawsuit was filed by Gabriel J., a man from Washington who claims that he was burned due to defective safety features on an Instant Pot Duo Gourmet 60 Pressure Cooker.
He blames his burn injuries on a defective lid that unsuspecting consumers can potentially twist open when the Instant Pot is still pressurized, which can result in a rapid release of built-up pressure.
He claims that he was seriously burned when he opened the lid and scalding-hot food and liquid exploded out of the pot.
The lawsuit claims that Costco and the manufacturer knew (or should have known) about the potential burn hazards of the Instant Pot, but failed to adequately warn consumers about the risk.
The defendants are Costco Wholesale Corporation and Midea America Corp., the retailer and importer of the Instant Pot Duo 60.
The lawsuit is Jusi v. Costco Wholesale Corporation et al
The case was filed on December 16, 2024 in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Washington — Case Number 2:24-cv-02067.
